  8. This is a Gopher+ Client for windows 3.1.
  9. Although it is a Beta release, hopefully it will prove quite stable.

  51. NOTE: CSO fan's I should qualify that last statement - HGopher will recognize
  52.       a CSO item and spawn off a viewer of your choice with parameters of your
  53.       choice -- Unfortunately there is no CSO application for windows that I
  54.       know about  -- This is the next thing I am going to write - hopefully should 
  55.       not take long.

  57. Requirements

  59.     WINSOCK VERSION

  61.     * MS Windows 3.1  (not tested with Windows 3.0)
  62.       Or Windows NT.
  63.     * Winsock DLL and TCP/IP+Packet support layer.
  64.     * See later for a list of Winsock tested versions.

  66.     PC NFS VERSION
  67.     
  68.     * MS Windows 3.1 (not tested with Windows 3.0)
  69.     * PC NFS Version 4 or version 5 (may work with other versions)
  70.           NOTE: you can also use the Winsock version with PC NFS 5.0
  71.                 and I suggest you do, as support for the native PC NFS
  72.                 version may be withdrawn at some point.

  75. Installation

  77.     Available for ANON FTP from lister.cc.ic.ac.uk
  78.         
  79.     Change to directory pub/wingopher and collect one of the files
  80.  
  81.     hgopher2.2.zip   [Winsock Version]      (Binary mode required)
  82.     hngopher2.2.zip  [Sun PC NFS Version]   (Binary mode required)

  85.         Unzip the package you have chosen to get 
  86.         hgopher.exe / hngopher.exe
  87.         hgopher.hlp

  91.         Then read the readme.txt (this file).

  94.         Install these files in your windows directory.

  96.     You should also be able to get this product

  106. Troubleshooting
  107.     
  108.     WINSOCK VERSION
  109.  
  110.     The first time you start it hgopher may not be able to 
  111.     connect to a server or will probably connect to the wrong
  112.     server
  113.     Use the Options  menu to config it as follows
  114.  
  115.     Gopher Options
  116.     
  117.     Set the name and path of your favorite gopher server
  118.  
  119.     Select a directory for temp files that already exists
  120.  
  121.     Hit the save button to save these setting between sessions
  122.     Hit the OK button to use these setting now
  123.  
  124.     use "go home" from the command menu to get the main menu 
  125.     from your default gopher.
  126.  
  127.     Network setup
  128.     
  129.     Set whether you are using DNS or the Vendor look up
  130.     service - If your vendor supports DNS lookup themselves
  131.     I suggest you use their service as the inbuilt DNS has
  132.     been shown not to work on some (most) Winsock versions. 
  133.  
  134.     If you are using the Winsock version with PC NFS you must
  135.         use the inbuilt DNS as Sun have not only not bothered to
  136.     implement DNS support but their own NIS does not function
  137.     with their Winsock either (at least at the release level
  138.     I have).
  139.     
  140.     If using the inbuilt DNS remember to use IP addresses and
  141.     not host names.
  142.  
  143.         WINSOCK USERS PLEASE NOTE - The file WINSOCK.DLL is required by this
  144.         program - if you don't have that file you are not running winsock.
  145.         WINSOCK.DLL does not come with HGopher, it is part of the network
  146.         package you are using. WINSOCK.DLL are NOT interchangable you must
  147.         use the correct one for your network stack. Public domain/ Shareware
  148.         WINSOCK stacks are begining to appear - tune to alt.winsock to stay
  149.         in touch with what is going on in this field.

  152.     PC NFS VERSION
  153.  
  154.     Make sure at least RTM is loaded before you start Windows
  155.

  190. The Beta 1.0 was tested against the following winsock implementations

  192.     Lanera        - Verified to work
  193.     Distinct    - Verified to work
  194.     Netmange    - Believed to work
  195.     PC NFS 5.0      - Verified to work
  196.     PCTCP 2.11    - Verified to work
  197.     PCTCP 2.2    - Verified to work - However if you get a message
  198.               like PCTCPAPI052: get_kernel_info: Bad net_dope
  199.                           structure 0x1ae01197, try getting a newer version
  200.                   of their winsoc dll via ANON ftp
  201.               vax.ftp.com:/pub/winsockapi/FTPSoftware/winsock.dll.
  202.     SuperTcp 3.56   - Verified to work
  203.     Windows NT      - Verified to work under Beta version
  204.         Wintrumpet Socket version 1.00 alpha #12  Verified to work
  205.     Wollongong Pathway for DOS Runtime Release 1.2.0.1 with fix c42992a.exe

  207. The Beta 2.2 version has only been tested with
  208.  
  209.     PC NFS Version 5
  210.         Novell  Lan WorkPlace for DOS Ver 4.1 (Patch level N)
  211.         ( Special thanks to Brian Meek of Novell for making this software
  212.           available to me).

  214. Known Bugs
  215.  
  216.         Bug #4 Problem co existing with Vista Exceed
  217.            ( increase heap size to 64 to get around this)
  218.     Bug #5 Inbuilt DNS fails under some Winsock Implementations
  219.                ( Probably not both to fix this)
  220.         Bug #8 When iconized during a transfer fails to get some message
  221.                can result in a "dancing gopher".
  222.         Bug #9 Occasional "not present faults"
  223.         Bug #10 Close (rather than Exit) can cause abort.
